Red meat (beef, veal and lamb) is a nutrient dense food, which provides high quality protein and essential nutrients - iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids - without lots of fat.
Analysis of the National Nutrition Survey showed that in an average Australian adult's diet, red meat contributed:
- 20% of the daily protein
- 52% of the haem iron
- 27% of the zinc
- 24% of the vitamin B12
- 28% of long-chain omega-3s
- but only 8% of the total fat intake.
